Sundarbans, the biggest delta and the largest mangrove forest in the world with unique ecosystem is spread over India and Bangladesh with a total area of approximately 10,000 sq kms, of which forests in Bangladesh’s Khulna Division extend over 6,517 sq kms and in West Bengal, the jungle extends over 3,483 sq kms across two districts,viz., South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas districts. Sundarbans is the delta where two mighty rivers, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra converge on the Bengal basin. The core area of the Sundarbans in Indian part was declared as a National Park in 1984. The National Park is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The deltaic forests of the Sundarbans are natural habitats of Royal Bengal Tigers. Sundarbans is the only mangrove forest in the world which is the natural abode for tigers. Sundarbans Tiger Reserve was created in 1973. The world’s largest estuarine wetland Sundarban is the home to deers, wild boars, foxes, mongooses, jungle cats, fishing cats, crabs, turtles, snakes of different species. you may notice there skipping frogs and and tree frogs.
The network of rivers and creeks of the Sundarbans is the home to saltwater crocodiles, mugger crocodiles, gharials (Gavialis gangeticus); olive ridley, Green sea and Hawksbill turtles, Gangetic dolphins and wide range of fishes.
Birds of rare specise like Goliath Heron, Buffy Fish Owl, Eurasian Curlew, and Lesser Sand Plover may be noticed in the jungle areas. There are at least 400 bird specise in the Sundarbans. Migratory birds too are noticed there which include Ducks, Wild Geese, Partridges, Small Spoonbills, SandPipers, Green Pigeons, Cormorants, Storks, Herons, Egrets, Herons.
By a well-organised boat safari one can explore amazing forests, there are watchtowers inside islands to watch deep areas in the forests and animals may come to your notice. Besides, you can see everyday life of local people and try to understand local culture.

Taki is an old city of Basirhat sub-division in North 24 Parganas, 70 Kms from Kolkata by road, nearest rail station being taki road. The river Ichamati, long walkway on its bank with food stalls, Mini Sundarban Eco Park, Rajbari, temples are attractions in Taki. The wide river Ichamati and the flowing life on the river is to behold. A great weekend place at least one night. In winter season picnicars come to Taki in large numbers.
