The house with arched windows, wrought-iron railings, balconies furnished with vintage wooden furnitures located on Sudder Street between Dharmatala and Park Street in Kolkata (West bengal, India) was built in 1783 as a colonial Bungalow by a European Mr, William Ford, while Warren Hastings was in the office of the Governor General of Bengal later turned into a heritage hotel which has been continuing to serve its guests.
In the Second World War the property became a shelter for Canadian Airforce personnel and was known as ‘Canada House’ for some years. The Bungalow became a hotel in 1936 while its ownership was in the hands of Mrs. Rose Smith of American origin. The hotel was named as ‘Fairlawn’ for a long time. Elgin Hotels Group acquired the hotel in 2018 and the name of the hotel changed to ‘Elgin fairlawn’.
Throughout its glorious history, this hotel hosted many notable guests including eminent artists, writers, film personalities from across the world.
Late Indian film actor Shashi Kapoor met his wife British actrss Jennifer Kendal first in this hotel and celebrated their honeymoon in Fairlawn in 1958. Shashi Kapoor liked to stay in Fairlawn hotel in Kolkata (earstwhile Calcutta). He felt at home in room No. 17 which is marked as ‘Shashi Kapoor Room’.
Elgin Fairlawn maintains the tradition of serving full English breakfast. Besides the dining room, there are cafe and lounges.
