It is a smooth drive of about 1.30 to 1.45 hours from Kolkata via Durgapur Expressway. The nearest rail station is Memari in Burdwan district of West Bengal. You will pass Paddy fields, ponds, coconut and mango groves, and the rural Bengal will reveal itself. From Memari Station, it is 4 kilometres. You will reach Amadpur village and enter a heritage zone. The 400-year-old ‘Chaudhuri Bari’ is there to welcome you.
The Sen Sharmas originally be longed to Trihotto or Tehatta Village of Royal Bengal. Sections of the family migrated to the Kingdom of Gour. Shri Krishna Ram Sen Sharma was held in very high esteem by the Nawab of Murshidabad for his abilities and many qualities. He was granted several Zamindaries in Burdwan and Murshidabad districts. His two sons were given ‘khetabs’ of Chaudhuri and Majumdar respectively.
The Chaudhuris built a palace in the village of Amadpur. It is now a 400-year old property. So, you have come to a heritage property and to an old village of Bengal. Now the property is a heritage homestay.
Mr. Shiladitya Chaudhuri, a member of Choudhuri Family has taken a praiseworthy initiative to protect his ancestral home. He says “The reason why I am hosting you all is because I want people to experience the rich heritage, culture and unique cuisine of Bengal of a bygone era. I felt that the best experience for this would be to stay in a house that is historical and is centuries old.”
Mr Chaudhuri says that another reason for opening doors of this heritage house to guests is to creat a source of employment for the present generation of those family retainers who have faithfully served ancestors of the Chaudhuri family of Amadpur. People who work here are aware of the lagacy of this property.
